Back Market, the leading marketplace for refurbished electronics, has officially partnered with Google to launch a new, limited-scale USB pilot program aimed at extending the lifespan of older, yet hardware-capable laptops. By installing the ChromeOS Flex operating system, earlier Windows and Mac computers can be made fast, secure, and suitable for everyday tasks once again, allowing users to save money while significantly reducing e-waste.
Announced on March 4, 2026, the partnership is built on a very clear and simple premise: there are countless devices currently on the market and in homes that function perfectly well physically, needing only the right software to remain secure and highly usable in everyday life.
Fighting E-Waste by Saving Existing Technology
Thibaud Hug de Larauze, CEO and co-founder of Back Market, highlighted the industry-wide problem and the proposed solution upon the launch of the program. He emphasized that extending the lifespan of existing technology is one of the most direct and effective ways to combat the growing mountain of electronic waste (e-waste).
According to the CEO, the collaboration with Google offers a practical solution and reflects a necessary shift in perspective: innovation should not automatically equate to constant hardware replacement. Innovation must also be about improving the devices we already own and keeping them in the system for a longer period.
What is ChromeOS Flex and How Does it Work?
The key to this technological renewal is ChromeOS Flex, developed by Google. This is a highly secure, cloud-first operating system whose greatest advantage is that it can be seamlessly installed on many existing, older-generation Windows and Mac devices.
The software is designed to deliver a modern, web-based user experience by moving software intelligence, system updates, and security protocols to the cloud. Thanks to this offloading, compatible but older hardware can continue to run smoothly and quickly for everyday tasks, such as:
-
Internet browsing
-
Content consumption and streaming
-
Document editing and creation
-
General web-based work
Focus on Schools, Small Businesses, and Everyday Consumers
As part of the initial partnership, Back Market will offer the system on special installation USB drives (ChromeOS Flex USB keys). These media drives provide sellers, buyers, educational institutions (schools), and small businesses with an incredibly simple and straightforward method to install the secure operating system on compatible laptops.
According to the official announcement, the pilot program launching now is limited in scale. The primary goal of the project is data collection and learning: the companies want to map out how software-based lifespan extension can be made as easily accessible as possible for average, everyday users. The shared vision of Google and Back Market is to put control back into the hands of users, sustainably extending device lifespans and avoiding unnecessary disposal.
