The Municipality of Milan has introduced a significant waste management innovation that simplifies the daily lives of its residents: used aluminum coffee capsules can now be thrown directly into the home’s yellow bag (sacco giallo), which is reserved for plastic and metal packaging. Born from an exemplary collaboration between the public and private sectors, this initiative puts an end to the practice of these valuable resource-containing coffee capsules ending up in general, mixed waste, thereby further boosting the city’s already outstanding recycling rate.
With the rise of at-home coffee consumption, the disposal of coffee capsules has become one of the most pressing urban waste management issues. The Municipality of Milan announced in an official statement that it is radically simplifying the collection of these products through a comprehensive collective system (sistema collettivo).
The program is the result of a close partnership between the city administration, Amsa (the local waste management company), A2A Ambiente, CIAL (National Aluminum Packaging Consortium), and Nespresso.
Relieving the Public and the 63 Percent Milestone
The primary goal of the new system is to ease the burden on residents. The citizens of Milan already do a remarkable job of separating their household waste into five main fractions. Under the new regulations, aluminum coffee capsules can now be placed in the same yellow bag used for traditional plastic and metal packaging waste.
This seemingly small step carries massive significance for the metropolis’s statistics. Milan currently boasts a 63 percent selective waste collection rate, which is exceptionally high among major European cities. By rescuing these capsules from the mixed waste stream, the city administration aims to improve this percentage even further.
The Strategic Role of Aluminum: Industrial-Scale Recycling
The ecological significance of the project is amplified by a specific national economic factor: Italy does not have any primary aluminum production. Because of this, recovering the raw material is of critical importance to the domestic industry.
With the involvement of CIAL, the program ensures recycling on an “industrial scale” (su scala). This network is capable of processing not only large, rigid aluminum packaging (such as beverage cans and trays) but also the smallest fractions, such as bottle caps, pharmaceutical blister packs, and now, used coffee capsules. Through material recycling, aluminum can be infinitely reshaped into new, reusable products without any loss of quality.
Expansion and Information Campaign for a Successful Transition
To ensure a smooth transition, the consortium has launched an extensive, multi-channel communication campaign. The information drive includes physical outdoor advertising on the city streets, as well as digital and social media campaigns across the platforms of Amsa, CIAL, and Nespresso.
The convenient yellow bag collection system introduced in Milan will not stop at the city limits: following a successful rollout, the innovation will be gradually expanded to other municipalities in the hinterland served by Amsa.
