The waste management sector has reached a defining milestone in addressing the global environmental challenge posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals.” On June 9, 2026, Florham Park, N.J.-based Reworld®, a leader in sustainable waste solutions, announced the launch of ReAssure™ PFAS Destruction. This service offers the nation’s largest full-scale destruction capacity for PFAS-containing materials across municipal, commercial, and industrial waste streams. Validated by rigorous testing, these Thermomechanical Treatment Facilities (TTFs) ensure 99% destruction and removal of PFAS, replacing indefinite landfill storage that shifts the environmental burden to future generations.

The Scale of the PFAS Crisis and the Dead End of Landfilling

PFAS exposure is widespread globally. These synthetic compounds have been utilized in tens of thousands of products since their initial creation in the 1930s, including many common items in daily human life. Designed to be highly stable and resistant, they do not break down naturally, earning them the industry name “forever chemicals.” Furthermore, PFAS compounds are highly toxic, ubiquitous, bioaccumulative, and highly soluble in water, allowing them to migrate rapidly through the environment.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) identified that “nearly all people in the U.S. have PFAS in their blood,” based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tests dating back to 1999. Combined, these issues make PFAS contamination one of the most substantial environmental challenges the world has ever faced.

For years, landfills have served as the default destination for PFAS-containing materials. However, landfilling does not destroy PFAS; it simply stores it temporarily. Rainwater passing through the waste creates highly contaminated PFAS-containing leachate, which is often sent to municipal wastewater treatment plants that are fundamentally not designed to manage or eliminate these complex compounds. Additionally, recent peer-reviewed research demonstrates that PFAS is also released into the atmosphere through landfill gas emissions, making full-scale thermal destruction an increasingly critical component of any permanent solution.

How ReAssure™ Works: Destruction Based on the “5 Ts”

To permanently remove PFAS from circulation when materials reach their end-of-life, Reworld is moving past localized studies and small-scale pilots by offering immediate, full-scale commercial destruction capacity. ReAssure provides customers with direct access to approximately 17 million tons of processing capacity through its network of Thermomechanical Treatment Facilities (TTFs), which are strategically available in all major markets across the United States. These specialized facilities process waste streams at temperatures exceeding 1,100°C (2,012°F), a thermal threshold widely cited by scientific authorities as highly effective for breaking down PFAS molecular bonds.

Traditional thermal destruction methodologies rely heavily on the classic “three Ts” of combustion: Time, Turbulence, and Temperature. The Reworld ReAssure framework introduces two additional operational dimensions to this standard: Turnkey and Traceability. This represents a complete closed-loop capability to manage PFAS waste from the point of initial pickup to final thermal destruction through a single, unified provider, maintaining a fully documented and verifiable chain-of-custody every step of the way.

Quantitative Data and EPA Collaboration Results

Recent testing campaigns conducted at Reworld TTFs in Pennsylvania and Minnesota have produced highly consistent empirical findings: the facilities operate at a processing capacity scale over 17 times greater than standard hazardous waste incineration. Based on published baseline ranges of PFAS within municipal and industrial waste streams, these facilities consistently achieve a PFAS removal efficiency of 99% and higher.

Testing demonstrates that PFAS compounds are generally non-detectable or measured at negligible concentrations in stack emissions, falling well below ambient air quality safety standards. To further validate these operations, a comprehensive, peer-reviewed report detailing collaborative testing with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to be published in the near future.

The Industry’s Largest Logistics Network for Liquids and Solids

The ReAssure infrastructure addresses an expanding gap within the broader waste management industry. Currently, PFAS is being captured and concentrated in downstream environmental byproducts such as landfill leachate, biosolids, sludges, and industrial treatment residuals. Landfill operators and publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) are frequently left managing these highly concentrated hazardous materials without possessing the specialized thermal assets required for final destruction.

Reworld steps into this bottleneck with a comprehensive network of over 50 material processing facilities (MPFs). These facilities receive, process, and prepare non-bulk PFAS wastes for safe transit and delivery to the primary TTFs, substantially expanding the geographic reach of the solution. For liquid waste streams and wastewater, Reworld helps close the loop by managing PFAS-containing liquids via activated carbon treatment, subsequently routing the spent carbon, filter media, treatment residues, and other associated solid byproducts directly into the high-temperature TTFs for final, absolute destruction.

“To effectively solve the problem, PFAS cannot be contained, stored or managed indefinitely; they must be destroyed. Every other strategy is a temporary measure that shifts a growing liability into the future,” said Azeez Mohammed, President and CEO of Reworld. “ReAssure is an effective, reliable solution that ends the cycle permanently and verifiably by processing and destroying PFAS in a wide variety of waste streams at scale. At Reworld, PFAS destruction is one of our superpowers.”

Mohammed continued: “We are not in the business of transferring PFAS from one liability to another. Our infrastructure is built to break the chain at scale.” Operating under some of the most stringent regulatory, monitoring, and testing mandates in the entire global waste management sector, the Reworld facility network simultaneously recovers usable energy while ensuring the controlled destruction of these complex chemical compounds.
