The new “Circular Value Creation Handbook” (Handbuch Kreislauffähige Wertschöpfung), jointly published by Fraunhofer IPA (Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation) and Fraunhofer IAO (Institute for Industrial Engineering), provides a detailed, practical guide on how economic actors can transition from traditional, linear production to sustainable, future-proof circular models. Maintaining industrial competitiveness is no longer conceivable without this strategic shift.
The Limits of the Linear Model and the Necessity of a Paradigm Shift
The true value of a product—and how much of it is ultimately lost—is decided on factory floors, in repair workshops, at recycling plants, and within research and development departments. Today, many industrial companies continue to operate according to the classic, linear pattern: manufacture, sell, use, and dispose. Published on July 10, 2026, and edited by Prof. Dr. Alexander Sauer (Director of Fraunhofer IPA), Dr. Robert Miehe (Head of Sustainable Value Creation Systems at Fraunhofer IPA), and Prof. Dr. Katharina Hölzle (Director of Fraunhofer IAO), one of the most crucial premises of this volume is that circular value creation extends far beyond merely optimizing waste management. For the circular economy to operate stably in everyday practice, companies must continue to generate profits within the new system. However, this requires a fundamental rethinking of existing business models. In a circular economic model, companies no longer merely sell an isolated physical product to buyers; instead, they offer a complex Product-Service-System that integrates the actual usage, regular maintenance, and end-of-life take-back.
If the manufacturing company remains the actual owner of the product, it has a direct financial interest in ensuring that the devices it produces have the longest possible lifespan and are easy to repair. With this approach, the incorporated materials and expensive components retain their original value.
The practical benefits of this concept are immediately apparent on multiple levels: companies save a substantial amount of raw materials, meaningfully reduce financial and cost risks, and successfully decouple themselves from rapidly changing, volatile global markets. Less material loss directly translates to less waste, lower environmental impact, and a much higher level of domestic supply security. The problem of scarce resources thus transforms into a highly specific, solvable task for design, production, procurement, and management.
From Theory to Practice: The Target Audience of the New Publication
The volume does not operate merely on a theoretical level. It gathers research and application examples, demonstrating—among other things, through a specific case study in mechanical and plant engineering—how companies can initiate this complex transformation. Additional chapters cover topics such as plastics, electric vehicles, electric motors, production management, product development, circular controlling, as well as legal frameworks, necessary competencies, and further education.
Following the comprehension of the theory, the next logical step is practical application. The publication emphasizes that companies must immediately review their internal processes to map out where material losses can be avoided and how product return flows can be organized. At the same time, the research sector and the industry must clarify several open questions, such as when reuse is more profitable compared to classic recycling, and what specific regulations can create a reliable and predictable market for secondary raw materials.
