The global lithium-ion battery recycling market is projected to surge from $4.56 billion in 2025 to $31.95 billion by 2035, representing a staggering compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.5%. This growth is driven by the mass retirement of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, technological innovations, and tightening government regulations. In this article, we explore the prospects of the recycling industry based on the latest market data.

Drivers of Growth: The Retirement of Electric Vehicle Batteries

The lithium-ion battery recycling industry encompasses industrial processes that recover valuable raw materials—including lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and copper—from spent batteries and manufacturing scrap. Based on 2025 data, automotive batteries dominated the market with a 68.1% share. In contrast, consumer electronics batteries generated $0.48 billion in revenue in the same year, but growth in this area is moderating due to the extended lifespan of smart devices.

The market’s exponential growth trajectory predicted between 2026 and 2035 (at 21.5% CAGR) is fueled by two extremely strong catalysts. The first is the accelerating rate of electric vehicle battery retirements. Mass-market EVs sold between 2015 and 2018 began reaching the end of their useful lives during 2024 and 2025, pouring an estimated 280,000 tons of battery packs into global collection systems. This wave is expected to intensify between 2027 and 2030, when vehicles sold during the industry boom of 2019 to 2022 will also be retired.

Tightening Regulatory Environment and Government Incentives

Another major driver of market expansion is the emergence of legal obligations. In the United States, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) ties EV tax credits to domestic content requirements. Consequently, significant capital is flowing into domestic recycling capacities, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy with over $2 billion in loan guarantees.

China mandates that 65% of batteries must be recycled by 2025 through a digital tracking system. South Korea is also demanding a strict 80% collection rate by 2028. In Europe, the EU Battery Regulation obliges players through extended producer responsibility (EPR) rules: under the legislation, by 2031, new batteries placed on the European market must contain at least 16% recycled cobalt, 6% recycled lithium, and 6% recycled nickel.

Technological Revolution: The Rise of Hydrometallurgy

A distinct technological shift is observable in the industry. Energy-intensive pyrometallurgical (heat-based) smelting is increasingly being overshadowed by hydrometallurgical (water-based) and direct recycling processes. By 2025, hydrometallurgical processes already dominated 58.4% of the global market. These methods recover metals with far greater precision: recovery rates for nickel, cobalt, and manganese now exceed 99%, and they also outperform thermal alternatives in lithium recovery.

Direct materials recycling has also emerged as an innovative technology, preserving active battery materials in their original state and thereby reducing energy consumption. This segment, along with cathode regeneration, is expected to expand at an outstanding CAGR of 30.7% through 2035. Automated, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven sorting innovations are further optimizing these processes.

Regional Distribution and Massive Investments

Examining the regional market, North America leads, accounting for 35.4% of global revenues in 2025 (within which the US holds an 86.5% dominance). The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing area with a 23.8% annual expansion, as Chinese and South Korean companies integrate processing into their own gigafactories. Europe is the second-largest market with approximately a 23% share. South America currently holds about 4% of the market, while the Middle East and Africa account for roughly 3%.

BloombergNEF data indicates that investments in global battery recycling capacity exceeded $8 billion between 2022 and 2024, funding the construction or development of at least 35 commercial-scale facilities.

Market Challenges and Future Trends: Raw Material Price Volatility

Despite a significant capital influx, the industry faces severe challenges. Raw material prices are highly volatile: the price of lithium carbonate fluctuated between $12,000 and $80,000 per ton from 2022 to 2024. During a drastic collapse, prices plummeted by 85% between March 2024 and December 2025, dragging down the price of battery “black mass” and forcing some recycling companies into negative margins.

Market prospects include the short-term use of gigafactory scrap as a feedstock, the rise of data-driven trading platforms, and increased corporate pressure to establish closed-loop systems due to ESG reporting (especially Scope 3 emissions). Geographically, new emerging markets are also getting on the map, for instance in India and the Southeast Asia region.
