Guests included District Administrator Mario Löhr, Mayor Lars Hübchen, Economic Promoter Matthias Stiller, Wulf-Christian Ehrich from the Dortmund Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), Ralf Bülte, Head of Planning for the City of Werne, and representatives from the construction partner Goldbeck.
Driven by the RCS Group plastic waste processing investment, the upcoming facility will be capable of processing approximately 100,000 tons of plastic annually. Furthermore, the project is expected to create around 60 new jobs in the region, which includes approximately five apprenticeships.
Independent Infrastructure and Processing Capabilities
The new complex will operate as a fully independent location for RCS Plastics GmbH, complete with its own production, logistics, administration, maintenance, and service departments. The facility is set to recycle HDPE cap closures, PS, PET trays, and beverage bottles into high-quality recyclates for various applications. Gerd Francke, Managing Partner of the RCS Group, emphasized that this investment lays the foundation for continued growth while simultaneously strengthening the circular economy. He stated that the groundbreaking marks a project that will permanently shape the location of Werne and decisively advance the development of the RCS Group.
Pioneering Food-Grade HDPE Recycling
The new site goes beyond merely increasing capacity; it represents a major technological leap forward. A key focus lies in the development and production of food-grade recycled material derived from HDPE caps. According to Alexander Rimmer, Managing Director of the RCS Group, the creation of food-grade HDPE recyclates is one of the greatest challenges in the industry. The necessary approvals are demanding and set high standards for technology, quality assurance, and documentation, which RCS plans to meet by investing in innovative processes to open up new material cycles.
Strong Regional Support and Future Outlook
The realization of this project was significantly supported by close cooperation with local authorities, the district government, and the city of Werne. Managing Director Adelheid Hauschopp-Francke expressed special gratitude during her speech for the exceptionally constructive and swift administrative assistance, noting that the collaboration demonstrates what is possible when public administration and companies pull together. Completion of the new site is currently scheduled for late 2027 to early 2028.
