A 35-year-old sanitation worker was stabbed to death on the street by a local resident after repeatedly requesting compliance with waste segregation rules. According to the official report by the Hindustan Times, the fatal incident occurred on a Monday morning in Camp Number 22 of Ulhasnagar, located in the Thane district. The crime highlights the unexpected and extreme physical dangers that frontline sanitation workers can face while performing their daily civic duties.
A Fatal Dispute in Camp 22: The Price of Unsegregated Waste
Based on the police investigation, the 35-year-old victim was a contractual employee for an agency named Konark Infrastructure, which handled garbage collection and disposal on behalf of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. The worker’s daily assignment was to collect garbage from Camp 22.
The conflict erupted between the sanitation worker and a 32-year-old electronics mechanic, Durgesh Gupta. According to police reports, the two men had previously engaged in multiple verbal arguments and even physical altercations over improper waste disposal. Despite the victim’s repeated requests, Gupta consistently refused to segregate his wet and dry waste, frequently dumping his garbage in multiple plastic bins at irregular spots rather than the designated collection points.
Brutal Attack with a Kitchen Knife
On Monday morning, the argument over the unsegregated garbage flared up again and quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Investigators reported that in a fit of rage, Gupta grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the sanitation worker in the stomach multiple times.
“When the worker tried to escape, Gupta pinned him down,” stated an official working on the case.
Local residents eventually intervened, rescuing the heavily bleeding victim from the attacker’s grasp and rushing him to a nearby hospital. Despite their quick intervention, the man’s life could not be saved; he was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
A Wife’s Suicide and the Orphaned Children

Police records revealed that the murdered man originally hailed from Jalgaon and had moved to Ulhasnagar approximately 10 years ago. He had two children from his first marriage; his first wife had passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic. He later remarried, and the two children lived in a single household with him and his second wife. As a result of Monday’s events, the children have now lost both of their parents.
