TerraCycle®, an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions, specifically through its TerraCycle Commercial™ division, has officially announced the launch of a new, nationwide collection and recycling service for used nicotine vape devices. This turnkey solution is designed to tackle one of America’s fastest-growing waste streams while fully complying with federal and state regulatory requirements. As a critical element of the program, collected nicotine pods are disposed of safely through strict incineration protocols in compliance with applicable legal guidelines.

The Critical Waste Problem and Fire Hazards of E-Cigarettes

Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, emphasizes that used vapes have been one of the fastest-growing waste management challenges for years. These devices present real physical and environmental risks when improperly handled. Szaky noted that until now, there has been no clear path to a scalable recycling solution on the market. However, through the dedication of the company’s research and development (R&D) team, operations and compliance experts, and strategic investments made to grow the company, TerraCycle has successfully delivered a national solution for vape device recycling in the United States.

In the U.S., the improper disposal of used vape devices creates severe safety risks, and their disposal is now tightly regulated by law in a growing number of states. The core of the problem lies in the lithium-ion batteries housed inside the devices, which pose a significant fire hazard when damaged, compacted, or exposed to extreme temperatures. These hazardous conditions are routinely encountered in trash compactors, garbage trucks, and landfills. According to a recent Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) report on vape waste, fires in waste facilities caused by disposable vape devices cost at least $95 million each year in the United States alone.

Operational Details and Quantities of TerraCycle’s New Service

The “TerraCycle Nicotine Vape Device Collection” solution is a turnkey, prepaid service designed for the compliant collection and recycling of used nicotine vape devices. It is structured to meet the needs of households, municipalities, schools, hotels, managed facilities, and various businesses. The comprehensive price covers device recycling, the collection container itself, inbound and outbound shipping logistics, and the proper disposal of the nicotine pods.

Each container is purposefully designed to collect and recycle used nicotine vape devices generated by households and individual consumers in strict compliance with the federal 40 CFR § 261.4(b)(1) regulation. The collection boxes are currently available to customers in three specific sizes:

  • 1.25-Gallon Capacity: Holds approximately 30 devices, with a strict weight limit of 22 lbs (approx. 10 kg).

  • 2.5-Gallon Capacity: Holds approximately 75 devices, with a weight limit of 35 lbs (approx. 15.8 kg).

  • 5-Gallon Capacity: Holds approximately 155 devices, with a weight limit of 55 lbs (approx. 24.9 kg).

For organizations, facilities, and municipalities planning to collect and recycle vape devices on a significantly larger scale, TerraCycle Commercial also offers bulk pallets and Full Truckload (FTL) shipments. The company highlights that all these scalable solutions offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional, expensive hazardous-waste incineration.

Through TerraCycle’s proprietary recycling process, compliant vape devices are safely disassembled, sorted by material type (such as plastics, metals, and batteries), and recycled in accordance with TerraCycle’s Recycling Guarantee. The separated nicotine pods are disposed of through controlled incineration in full compliance with applicable legal requirements.

Built on Innovation and International Success

TerraCycle has been at the forefront of recycling innovation for over 20 years, creating and operating first-of-their-kind platforms for more than 400 hard-to-recycle waste streams that are not typically accepted by standard municipal recycling programs. The recycling of e-cigarettes is not an entirely new frontier for the company; their VapeCycle program is currently active and highly successful in New Zealand, having collected and recycled more than one million vape devices to date.

Bringing this proven success to the United States has been made possible in part by recent acquisitions that have significantly expanded TerraCycle Commercial, a division of TerraCycle US. The company is actively raising capital through its Regulation A investment offering, with concrete plans to further scale its solutions to keep hard-to-recycle waste out of landfills. Operating across 18 countries, TerraCycle remains dedicated to its core mission: eliminating the idea of waste and moving the global economy from a linear model to a sustainable, circular one.

Important Legal and Compliance Information

The official PR statement includes strict guidelines regarding the scope and legal limitations of the new service. The collection and recycling solution is intended exclusively for used nicotine e-cigarettes and vape devices generated by households and individual consumers. According to federal definitions, “households” include single and multiple residences, hotels and motels, bunkhouses, ranger stations, crew quarters, campgrounds, picnic grounds, and day-use recreation areas.

In compliance with the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) exemption under 40 CFR § 261.4(b)(1), this service cannot be used for commercial inventory, manufacturing waste, officially recalled products, or other business-generated industrial waste. Customers hold the responsibility for determining whether their specific waste qualifies for the HHW exemption under applicable laws. Furthermore, TerraCycle explicitly states that the service is intended solely for waste management purposes and is not designed to promote the purchase or use of nicotine products in any way.
