According to an official release by the president’s press service on Thursday, the implementation of six waste-to-energy projects is being rapidly accelerated. These initiatives represent a total financial investment of 933 million U.S. dollars. All of these waste-to-energy projects in Uzbekistan are being executed in direct cooperation with Chinese enterprises. Planned for implementation throughout 2026 and 2027, the plants are located across six major regions: Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Tashkent, Andijan, Fergana, and Namangan. The facilities situated in the Kashkadarya and Samarkand regions are officially scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. Meanwhile, the advanced plants in the other four regions will become fully operational by 2027.
Processing Capacity and Environmental Targets
Once these state-of-the-art facilities reach their fully operational stage, they are expected to safely process 3.6 million tons of municipal solid waste on an annual basis. This large-scale waste processing will directly generate an impressive 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Beyond simple power generation, the initiatives bring significant economic and environmental advantages. The construction and ongoing operations will create 500 new local jobs. Furthermore, by generating clean electricity from solid waste, the country will successfully save 158 million cubic meters of natural gas while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 316,000 tons.
Moving Toward a Zero Waste Model
The presidential release emphasized that the completion of these strategic projects is expected to greatly accelerate Uzbekistan’s national transition toward a “zero waste” framework. By proactively redirecting municipal solid waste into energy production, the country aims to significantly reduce the heavy pressure currently placed on traditional landfills, thereby improving the overall ecological and environmental situation across the nation.
