In a major sustainability and logistical step for the global beverage packaging sector, international paper giant DS Smith has introduced a new brown box format for the Pernod Ricard group’s Absolut Vodka flavored product line and other spirits. The fully recyclable packaging, made from fiber-based corrugated cardboard, aims to maximize the protection of glass bottles in global supply chains while preserving the brand’s visual identity.
The collaboration between two major players in the packaging and spirits industries sets a new direction for eco-conscious logistics. The industry report published by Vidhya Edwards Munnangi on May 7, 2026, details the joint project of DS Smith and Absolut Vodka, which successfully combines functional physical protection with sustainable material use and precise brand identification.
Focus on Fiber-Based, Recyclable Materials
The technical and environmental foundation of the project is the raw material itself: the new packaging is made entirely of fiber-based corrugated cardboard, ensuring its 100% recyclability. For Absolut Vodka, operating under the Pernod Ricard group, this transition into greener logistics began earlier: these brown, eco-friendly corrugated cardboard boxes have already been in use for shipping the flavored vodka range to European customers since 2025.
Design and Brand Identification: Color Codes and Reimagined Ink Use
The shift in packaging materials also involved significant aesthetic modifications. While the earlier packaging for the flavored vodka range primarily featured a white glossy finish—which currently remains in use for certain variants—the new brown cardboard boxes required a completely different printing approach.
Experts from both companies developed several different box structures tailored to various Absolut products and flavor variations. The new system includes flavors such as lime, citron, pear, and watermelon. To ensure the products remain easily distinguishable during warehousing and retail display, the flavor variants are identified using intuitive color coding and printed artwork on the outside of the boxes, utilizing the brand’s well-known existing typeface.
Anton Bengtsson, key account manager at DS Smith, highlighted the strategy behind the visual transformation: “We changed the ink and branding on the exterior of the Absolut Vodka packaging to complement the aesthetic of the new brown boxes.” The expert added that they are delighted for the opportunity to collaborate with and support one of the most iconic and innovative brands in the spirits business in their complex packaging requirements.
Structural Integrity: Pressure Resistance and Shock Absorption
Alongside aesthetics and sustainability, the absolute most critical aspect of the development was physical product protection. The packaging was specifically engineered to protect fragile glass bottles during transport, whether it involves logistics to retail shops, hospitality outlets, or direct customers in various markets around the world.
Regarding the structural properties, Anton Bengtsson emphasized the durability and safety of the new boxes: “The solution allows the packaging to withstand pressure and resist crushing while simultaneously providing effective cushioning for the glass bottles during transit, shipping and handling.”
Further Packaging Technology Innovations at DS Smith
In addition to the joint project with Absolut Vodka, DS Smith is continuously pushing forward in developing its broader logistics and packaging technologies. The report also notes that the international paper company’s technology division, DS Smith Packaging Systems, introduced a new range of mandrel case forming and sealing equipment designed for higher-speed packaging lines last month, further strengthening its position in the market for efficient, automated, and innovative industrial packaging solutions.
