Carbon dioxide (CO2), long considered one of the main drivers of global warming, is no longer just discarded industrial waste. Thanks to the innovative technology of a company operating in a petrochemical industrial park in East China, the once useless gas has now become a valuable, highly profitable resource supplying numerous sectors, from lithium-ion battery manufacturing and the food industry to fertilizer production. Our analysis presents the practical and economic results of the Chinese carbon dioxide recycling model.

From Waste to High-Purity Raw Material

In the petrochemical industrial park of Jiujiang city in East China’s Jiangxi Province, emissions from coal-to-hydrogen plants posed a long-standing problem, as they could not properly handle the resulting carbon dioxide waste. Jiangxi Bazhen Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. turned this industrial challenge to its advantage.

According to Ao Huihua, the company’s general manager, the gas once treated simply as waste now holds massive potential. During the technological process, carbon dioxide is routed through pipelines to a special recovery unit. Here, the gas is compressed, purified, and then liquefied. As a result of this short process, high-purity liquid carbon dioxide is produced, which is an essential and valuable raw material for the battery industry, fertilizer production, and the food sector alike.

Quantified Results: Economic Indicators and Climate Protection

The project’s results yield double benefits: simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint and generating significant revenue. According to official data:

  • Over the past year, Jiangxi Bazhen recycled 102,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide waste.

  • This volume created an output value of 37 million yuan (approximately 5.43 million U.S. dollars), while petrochemical companies could drastically cut their emissions.

  • Based on information from project manager Zhong Jian, since the system was put into operation more than three years ago, a total of over 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide has been recovered.

  • In an environmental context, this staggering amount is equivalent to planting about 26.5 million trees, or offsetting the annual exhaust emissions of nearly 200,000 vehicles.

A Revolution in Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing

The recycled, high-purity carbon dioxide is increasingly shedding its “waste gas” label. Just a few kilometers from the Bazhen company’s plant, the Jiujiang Yunwei lithium industry company utilizes the captured emissions as a crucial auxiliary material for manufacturing battery-grade lithium carbonate.

On the production line, carbon dioxide is reacted with a lithium hydroxide solution (carbonization reaction), followed by solid-liquid separation, washing, and drying. Song Xiaopeng, the company’s production quality director, backed the efficiency with concrete numbers: producing a single tonne of battery-grade lithium carbonate requires 0.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The factory consumes about 300 tonnes of CO2 per month. The lithium carbonate produced through this method has extremely high purity, which is fundamentally important for improving the consistency and stability of the final product.

Local Supply Chain: 80 Percent Savings in Logistics

The established local carbon dioxide supply chain also provides a major competitive advantage for another local company, Jiangxi Tianji new energy company, which produces high-purity lithium fluoride. The company requires 1,000 tonnes of liquid carbon dioxide monthly for continuous production.

Administrative manager Tao Jianfeng explained that the stable partnership built with Bazhen enables same-day fulfillment and delivery of orders. Thanks to local transportation over short distances, the company’s logistics costs have dropped by nearly 80 percent, resulting in monthly savings of 160,000 yuan on freight charges. “This is not just a mere supply chain, but also a green and efficient carbon-reduction network,” the manager emphasized.

Food Industry Utilization: Sustainable Beer Production

Beyond industrial applications, recycled CO2 has become an inescapable factor in the food industry. At the Jiujiang Lushan brewery, located roughly 5 kilometers from Bazhen, liquid carbon dioxide is injected into storage tanks and, after gasification, transmitted directly to the production line.

Yang Guoqing, the plant’s production manager, pointed out that carbon dioxide plays a key role in the bottling department: it displaces air, preventing oxidation, and guarantees the crisp, fresh taste of the beer. General manager Li Jianfeng, summarizing the experience, stated that a reliable raw material supply results in stable quality, products with longer shelf lives, and lower costs. “It’s hard to imagine that the original carbon dioxide waste eventually became an indispensable raw material for beer production,” the general manager noted, adding: “This is a genuine carbon cycle that today represents a tremendous advantage for many industries.”
