Recycling at the Indianapolis 500: Circular Solutions and Verified Waste Management

Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500 is known for speed, precision, and scale. At the world’s largest single-day sporting event, which attracts approximately 350,000 fans, Circular Solutions will deploy its artificial intelligence and blockchain-based platform in 2026 to independently track and verify the recycling of PET bottles and aluminum cans.

The Hidden Challenge of Large-Scale Events

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) welcomes approximately 350,000 fans each year, creating a massive volume of waste—specifically plastic bottles and aluminum cans—once the race ends. According to Logan Waddle, Penske Entertainment Sustainability Program Leader, hosting an event of this size comes with a responsibility to manage operations as efficiently, sustainably, and responsibly as possible. Improving waste management during the event is a crucial, difference-making step.

Innovation in Tracking: Circular OS™

At the 2026 race, Circular Solutions, a market pioneer in recycling verification, will deploy its Circular OS™ platform. This system utilizes AI and blockchain technology to verify data at every step, helping organizations navigate the recycling supply chain. The initiative aims to independently verify and track landfill diversion for beverage containers, including PET bottles and aluminum cans. Operating across race activities, the system creates a clear, auditable record of how materials are managed after collection. Circular Solutions brings 20 years of experience, and unlike traditional reporting methods that rely on estimates, its platform produces independently validated data.

Data-Driven Transparency and Corporate Collaboration

JT Marburger, CEO of Circular Solutions, noted that events of this scale generate a massive volume of materials in a short period of time. The platform turns this activity into something measurable and actionable, providing clear data on where materials are going and where improvements can be made over time.

Republic Services, a leader in the environmental services industry, serves as a key partner providing material collection and processing. Ben Pearson, Republic Services General Manager, stated that when fans recycle their bottles and cans, they can be confident those materials are collected, processed, and recycled into new beverage containers. Together with IMS, they will verify the materials and provide a total landfill diversion rate.

The effort is also supported by Coca-Cola Consolidated, the official soft beverage and water sponsor of IMS. Todd Marty, Senior Director of Sustainability, emphasized that supporting container recovery and engaging fans contributes to more reliable outcomes, supporting sponsor transparency and broader ESG disclosures.

Indianapolis 500: Expanding Technology to Other Major Events

This marks the first deployment of Circular Solutions’ verification platform at the Indianapolis 500. However, additional deployments are already underway across major events, including the Special Olympics in Minnesota, taking place from June 20 to 26.
