Successful Launch: 10 Million Bottles and Cans in Two Months
During the first two months of operation of the Portuguese Deposit Return System (SDR), launched on April 10, 2026, citizens returned exactly 10,006,067 single-use containers to the loop. The system covers single-use plastic, metal, and aluminum bottles and cans with a capacity of under 3 liters. The network, operating under the “volta” brand, allows consumers to recover the €0.10 deposit paid at the time of purchase by returning the packaging to one of the more than 2,500 “Pontos volta” (return points). These points are accessible across mainland Portugal, as well as in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira.
Outstanding Results During the Transition Phase
This 10 million return figure is particularly significant given that the system is currently still in a transition phase. This means that packaging featuring the “volta” symbol is only progressively entering the commercial market. According to SDR Portugal (the managing entity of the system), the results achieved so far reflect the active participation of consumers and the commitment of joining partners to stabilize a national, operational, and efficient collection network.
Leonardo Mathias, President of SDR Portugal, emphasized that the first two months demonstrate clear consumer engagement at a time when the system is still scaling up. He noted that the return of 10,006,067 containers—averaging about one container per citizen—is much more than a statistical milestone: it marks the beginning of behavioral change. He expressed confidence that Portugal will follow the path of the most successful deposit return systems in Europe and thanked citizens for making this reality possible.
Consumer Habits: Sunday is Return Day
The operational data highlights interesting trends regarding consumer habits. Returns happen most frequently on weekends, particularly on Sundays. This indicates that the population is progressively adapting the system into their daily routines, integrating the return of “volta” packaging with their regular grocery shopping trips. The network was specifically designed to conveniently support the everyday lives of consumers.
Important Information: Transition Period Ends August 9
The transition period for the “volta” system runs until August 9, 2026. During this timeframe, packaging with and without the “volta” symbol coexists in the market, as currently available products are gradually replaced by new, integrated packaging. A fundamental rule is that purchasing containers without the “volta” symbol does not involve a deposit fee; consequently, these items will not be accepted by the reverse vending system. Consumers must continue to dispose of these non-deposit containers in traditional recycling bins (ecopontos).
Serving European Union Circularity Goals
The SDR is a crucial tool for Portugal to meet the European Union’s strict targets for the separate collection and recycling of single-use beverage packaging. The primary objective is to reach a 90% collection rate by 2029. Through “volta,” these containers are no longer treated as waste but are valued as high-quality, recyclable raw materials, allowing a plastic bottle to become a bottle again, and a can to become a can again.
