Footprint, a leader in sustainable packaging, has announced its expansion into the global cup market. By integrating a recyclable and home-compostable, hot and cold PE-free cups platform from Transcend Packaging, along with next-generation paper lids and straws, the company is delivering a practical, industrial-scale alternative to traditional single-use plastic-lined paper cups.

The Plastic Crisis and the Challenge of Everyday Cups

The global plastic crisis remains one of the most defining environmental challenges of our time, with foodservice packaging contributing significantly to the problem. Cups are used every day, everywhere, yet the vast majority still rely on plastic linings to function properly. Footprint’s latest portfolio expansion tackles this issue head-on: its new cup and lid solution replaces traditional polyethylene (PE) plastic linings with a specialized mineral-based coating.

This technological shift allows the products to be fully recycled or composted at home, ensuring that consumers and food service providers do not have to compromise on performance or usability.

PE-Free Cups: Award-Winning Innovation and Independent Certification

The newly introduced PE-free cup technology has already garnered significant industry recognition. In Europe, it received a Gold Award at the 2025 Environmental Packaging Awards, alongside multiple honors acknowledging its innovation and outstanding environmental performance.

Crucial to its credibility, the mineral-coated cups have been independently tested. These evaluations have verified the material’s composition and confirmed that the product meets strict standards for both recyclability and compostability.

Industrial-Scale Production: Focus on Poland and Wales

To scale this technology globally, Footprint is initiating its expansion across Europe. The ramping up of production will begin at the company’s manufacturing facility in Poland. To ensure that growing market demands are fully met and to maintain supply continuity for customers during this expansion, Footprint has established a strategic manufacturing partnership with Transcend Packaging.

Under this agreement, Transcend will manufacture the products at its facility in Wales to support Footprint’s clients, while simultaneously continuing to serve its own customer base across the UK and Ireland. This approach guarantees a reliable supply chain as Footprint brings additional capacity online. Following the European rollout, the company plans to introduce this high-performing, PE-free portfolio to North America.

Leadership Vision and Stricter Regulations

“Cups are used every day, everywhere, and too many still depend on plastic to perform,” stated Corey Berends, Chief Executive Officer of Footprint. According to Berends, the PE-free cup platform provides Footprint with a proven technology that can be scaled globally during a critical time when customers urgently need solutions to meet emerging regulatory requirements and corporate sustainability goals.

Footprint’s mission is to apply technology and innovation to solve the biggest challenges in the packaging industry. The ultimate goal is to create a healthier planet and healthier people by ensuring that practical, high-performing alternatives to single-use plastics become the industry standard, rather than the exception.
