Plastic Cup river cleanup sets a record: 18.9 tonnes from the Bodrog and Tisza floodplains

The 2026 season of the Plastic Cup river cleanup has closed with a record. At the 7th Bodrog–14th Tisza Plastic Cup, participants collected and sorted a total of 18.9 tonnes of waste. The combined event was organised by the Plastic Cup Society (PET Kupa Egyesület) between 15 and 23 August on the stretch of river between Olaszliszka and Tiszalök, with 12 teams taking part.

The figure is notable in itself. Its context is even more telling.

Fewer teams, more waste

This year’s total exceeded the previous record of 17.5 tonnes, set on the same route in 2024. Back then, however, 15 teams worked the floodplain; this year only 12 did. The field shrank, yet the volume collected grew.

That gap points to two things at once: the teams have become more efficient, and the area still has plenty left to give. According to the organisers, both are true. Eleven of the 12 teams were returning participants, so they could draw on previous years’ experience and on collection techniques they had developed themselves – a considerable advantage on floodplain sections that are hard to reach.

Where did the 18.9 tonnes come from?

The waste was split roughly evenly between the two rivers. On the Bodrog, along the Olaszliszka–Szegi–Bodrogkeresztúr and Tokaj stretch, 9.9 tonnes were collected in three days. On the Tisza, cleaning between Tokaj and Tiszaladány and then along further sections yielded another 9 tonnes from floodplain areas.

According to the organisers’ account, the waste composition differed between the two rivers: significantly more glass came out of the Bodrog, while the number of filled bags was higher on the Tisza. That difference matters for collection logistics – glass is heavy, but its transport and sorting requirements are quite unlike those of light, high-volume plastic.

A full floodplain, with no flood wave

One of the most important lessons of the record is that neither river saw a significant flood wave this year. The waste was therefore not the cargo of a recent flood: the teams also found waste that had been accumulating in floodplain forests for decades.

This contradicts a common assumption – that river waste is primarily a current load arriving from upstream. The reality is less comfortable: the floodplain stores. In the high-water channel and the floodplain forests, waste settles for years or decades at the base of shrubs, wedged among driftwood, buried in silt – and it only comes to light if someone physically goes in after it. A rise in collected volume therefore does not necessarily mean more waste is arriving; it can also mean that previously unreachable stocks have finally been tapped.

From a waste management perspective, that is an important distinction. Reducing the fresh load is a prevention question – packaging regulation, the deposit return system, the quality of household services. Clearing the accumulated stock, by contrast, is a remediation task, and one for which the Hungarian waste management system currently has no dedicated, system-level instrument. At present, this work is largely done by civil organisations and volunteers.

The season’s balance: 36.4 tonnes in 6,952 bags

According to the Plastic Cup Society, the 2026 competition season produced a total of 36.4 tonnes of waste across four events, collected in 6,952 bags. The combined August race accounted for more than half of that.

The bag count is the more interesting figure, because it reflects the actual volume of work more accurately than tonnage does. Almost seven thousand bags had to be filled, carried out of barely passable floodplain terrain, and then loaded onto boats or vehicles. This logistical effort is far less visible than the headline 36.4 tonnes, yet it accounts for most of the cost and resource demand of such an operation.

The Plastic Cup movement has been running since 2013, with the aim of cleaning the Tisza and its tributaries. According to the organisation’s earlier communications, the volume collected in Hungary exceeds 452 tonnes, and it manages to keep roughly 60 percent of the river waste in circulation. One hub of that processing is the River Rescue Centre at Kisköre, where sorting and baling – that is, preparation for recycling – take place in cooperation with the regional water directorate, KÖTIVIZIG.

This year’s combined race also saw the debut of the Plastic Cup Society’s new waste collection vessel, PETiX, which supported the field both in gathering the bags and in supplying the participants. A collection boat is not a showpiece in river cleaning: moving bags out from the floodplain is typically the bottleneck, because riverbank sections are often unreachable by road.

The event also featured a four-person canoe made from recycled plastic, most of it produced from sorted plastic waste taken out of the Tisza and the Bodrog. That object condenses the essence of the Plastic Cup’s message into a single item: waste pulled from the river does not disappear, it becomes material – and material you can take back onto the same river.

What the record says about waste management

The 18.9-tonne result can be read two ways. As a success: a well-organised, experienced volunteer field moved as much waste in nine days as the population of a small town generates in weeks. As a failure: after fourteen years of work on the Tisza and seven on the Bodrog, the floodplain is still yielding this much.

A few questions that data from coming seasons may answer:

  • Can the ratio of “fresh” to “legacy” waste be measurably separated? If collection is mostly moving decades-old stock, a rise in volume is not in itself a sign of a worsening situation.
  • Will clearing accumulated waste from the high-water channel emerge as a funded task in its own right, or will it remain within the civil sector?

The Plastic Cup’s contribution is that it does not merely raise these questions but also generates data for them – in bag counts, in tonnes, broken down by river section. Most of what is known in Hungary today about the volume of floodplain waste comes from this source.
