Houston-based WM has officially announced the latest phase of its “Landfill of the Future” project, becoming the first company in the solid waste industry to utilize Cat® Command remote-controlled technology. This innovative testing primarily aims to enhance employee safety and improve operational efficiency. A First in the Solid Waste Industry

WM is the first company to utilize Cat® Command remote-controlled technology in the solid waste industry. The company is now collaborating with Caterpillar to test autonomous operation of landfill equipment. This pioneering development builds on a successful pilot of remote-controlled heavy equipment in everyday landfill operations.

Results of the 2025 Arizona Pilot Project

In late 2025, WM began operating a bulldozer equipped with Cat® Command remote-controlled technology at its landfill in Marana, Arizona. During this pilot phase, the machine was specifically used to move and disperse waste. Based on the success of this remote-controlled technology pilot, the viability of integrating such machinery into daily waste management processes was proven.

Next Steps: Testing the Autonomous Landfill Compactor

Building on the success of the remote-controlled technology pilot in Arizona, WM and Caterpillar will collaborate on testing a Caterpillar-developed autonomous landfill compactor. According to the company’s announcement, this effort aims to advance the journey toward additional autonomous solutions in landfill operations.
